Attention comment spammers

2012-09-12 17:44
I have now added a nofollow attribute to all links in the comments section, so spammers will no longer get increased page ranks from Google or other search engines.

For non-spammers, add the following to an anchor tag and google won't follow that link:

rel="nofollow"

Samba/Winbind connection issues

2011-10-15 13:08
I recently had to reconfigure my linux (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) servers.
I had previously used these two howto's to configure my servers.
Suddenly one of them refused to properly connect with various error messages:

# wbinfo -p
Ping to winbindd failed

# wbinfo -u
Error looking up domain users

# wbinfo -t
checking the trust secret via RPC calls failed
Could not check secret

After a week of googling I finally found the following solution, which did the trick for me.

Stop smbd, nmbd and winbindd (make sure they are really dead using ps. winbindd still lingered after I stopped the service)
Delete the linux computer from the Primary Domain Controller (using the Management Console)
Delete the secrets database (/var/lib/samba/secrets.tdb)
Join the domain again
Start the daemons (smbd, nmbd and winbindd)
Test the winbind commands to see that everything is working

Trying a new thing with my blog

2011-10-15 11:23
Because I'm using Twitter, Facebook and Google+ I haven't really made any good posts to my blog for a while.
I'm trying to remedy this by taking my blog in a new direction.
As a "Technology Enthusiast" I regularly get stuck in various situations where I have to do a lot of googling. Some times I can google for a week and not find a solution.
When I finally do find a solution I've decided I should write about it on my blog so that others can (maybe) find the solution as well.
So don't be surprised when you see lots of technical stuff popping up on this blog instead of the usual ramblings about what happens (or not) in my life.

Spam be gone?

2009-11-02 18:27
I've now done an extensive cleanup on the site to remove spam comments. I should have been able to filter out and delete only the spam comments, but as always, the human mind is fallible... even mine... so if you're missing a comment you remember having written, I'm sorry, but it's been zapped. You could always write a new one, of course.
In order to try to prevent spam filling up this site in the future I've implemented a new CAPTCHA from the free (!) service called reCAPTCHA. I hope this will be good enough to hold the spambots at bay.
If you're one of the people sending spambots to my site, remember the wise words of modern day philosopher geek Wil Wheaton: Don't be a dick!

Where's Twitter?

2009-08-06 14:54
It seems Twitter is down. Now I'm all lost. I don't know what to do. I keep speaking in sentences of only 140 characters. I keep wondering what Barack Obama is up to. Suddenly I have no funny links to articles on the web or funny videos on YouTube. I can't even tell the world what I'm doing or what I've just seen.
So I've stooped to the level of actually writing on my blog again. That's what happens when the world stops.
So here's a short tweet:

"Watchmen". Very true to the graphic novel. Visually stunning (including Malin Akerman). A bit on the long side. 8/10

Who's my inner hero

Who's my inner hero
I found this site, where you can make your own hero, through this blog. The hero I made for myself didn't exactly turn out to be a big surprise to me (or the people who know me). It's a good idea, though, and I hope someone will pick up this comic book idea and call me in as a consultant.

Norwegian companies band together to ban IE6

Norwegian companies band together to ban IE6
If you're using the browser Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) or an older one, you should have got the message at the top of the browser telling you you should upgrade.

Why do I, and many other Norwegian companies, care about which browser you use? Shouldn't it be up to every individual what they want to use?

Words don't come easy

Words don't come easy
New, Now and Back. Apparently I like to use those words a lot. This is a Word Cloud with the most frequently used words appearing in my blog, generated with big help from Wordle, an online word cloud generator. I think the result turned out quite artistic, even though there are no big buzz words in the resulting cloud.
Tip of the hat to the Bad Astronomer for Wordle tip.

G.T. Phone Home

2009-01-07 12:06
G.T. Phone Home
I got a new mobile phone yesterday, which has just about all the functionality you would ever need (and also a bit more). The only thing it doesn't have is a touchscreen, but I already have an iPod Touch so I didn't really need an iPhone.
My new phone is a Nokia E71. My main requirement for a new phone was that it should have a full QWERTY keyboard, and after reading a lot of reviews I decided on that one.
Of useless features it even has a barcode reader to read those fancy 3D barcodes. Try reading the barcode attached to this article.
So far, after 24 hours of owning the phone, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm even happier that I didn't have to pay anything for it. Since I also use it as an office phone my boss paid for it. Free phones for everybody! Well, no... only for me.

Size does matter

Size does matter
Yesterday I bought a new TV. Not a big screen TV, but a huge screen TV. The specific make and model is Sony KDL-52W4500. It has excellent black levels and colours, plenty of peripheral inputs, and, of course, an enormous screen. If a movie is showing and the camera pans across some nature shots, I can't even walk beside the TV without getting dizzy.
This is definitely a big upgrade (pun intended) from my previous TV, which will see its final days in my parents downstairs living room.
