Synopsis
When the USA joins World War II, the old submarine S-33 must again prove its worth. The crew, lead by Captain Lieutanant Mike Dahlgren (Bill Paxton) and Lieutenant Andrew Tyler (Matthew McConaughey), are ordinary sea men with no battle experience. They sense something is afoot when they hurriedly set out on a new mission. It's not until they're at sea the mission is revealed. S-33 has been camouflaged as a German submarine. As a trojan horse, S-33 will meet a German submarine assumed to have an "Enigma" on board, a machine for exchanging secret codes that allow the Germans to give the allies great losses at sea. If the Americans can capture "Enigma", the war can take a drastic turn for the worse for the nazis. According to plan, the crew of S-33 shall destroy the submarine carrying "Enigma", take the Germans aboard as prisoners and bring them to the USA without the German warmachine ever finding out what happened. The plan fails. The Americans must escape in the German submarine after a hostile meeting with a German ship. Captured aboard an alien submarine in hostile waters, nine regular Americans must fight a battle against the clock - and their own fear.
